one thing about tumblr users isthat they love to disagree with posts. another thing is that they love to do is disagree with things that were not even in the post as if they were
this is just absolutely not true. people do not normally drink printer ink.
iliyad asked:
im taking a paper titled 'sex and power in greek and roman literature' for my final year of my classics degree and we're reading catullus 63 next week. thoughts?? i've never read catullus before
hortensius answered:
oh boy! i’m sure it will be an interesting read for your paper. i think catullus’ sensibility is truly unique in what’s left of the roman world, and his complex relation to gender and sexuality is certainly worth a special attention. my advice is to read all of catullus beforehands (he’s just 2000something lines in total). a caveat: some (me) love him a lot, but some find him unpleasant. you might find him unpleasant, i don’t know. it’s poetry that bites, y'know? it’s got teeth. anyway! personal preferences aside, he’s an extremely complex author and knowing his work is essential for anyone who studies roman literature. i can’t recommend specific bibliography for c. 63 because i’ve never focused on it very much, but i can suggest some useful introductory titles :)
commentaries (i prefer thomson but ofc it’s always good to check all the avalable comments):
- Fordyce, C. J. 1961: Catullus, a Commentary by C. J. Fordyce, ed. C. J. Fordyce, Glasgow;
- Thomson, D. F. S. 1997: Catullus: Edited with a Textual and Interpretative Commentary by D.F.S. Thomson, ed. D.F.S. Thomson, Toronto.
introductory essays:
- M. B. Skinner, M. B. (ed.) 2007. A Companion to Catullus, Oxford.
- Wiseman, T. P. 1985. Catullus and His World, Cambridge.
if you can read italian, i strongly recommend this too:
- Bellandi, F. 2007: Lepos e pathos. Studi su Catullo, Bologna;
Sharecropping.
FYI if your employer does this, if they have done it for a long time especially, you and your coworkers could be owed huge amounts of unpaid wages and it would be an easy suit if there is a paper trail like this and your employer is placing strict requirements on your behavior while not at work. Employment lawyers generally work on contingency. Just food for thought.
